Laton Carter’s first book of poems, Leaving, was selected by Mark Doty for the 2005 William Stafford-Hazel Hall Book Award. Carter was a finalist in Narrative’s Second Annual Poetry Contest and lives in Eugene, Oregon.

Ironing

The radio, turned down low,
picks up a station from Minneapolis.
Seventeen, and ironing dresses in the dining room.

All her sisters have gone to bed. They are
dreaming dreams not at all like the wakeful.
