David Romtvedt was born in Portland, Oregon, and received an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. He is the author of several poetry collections, including Some Church; Certainty; Moon; and the National Poetry Series selection A Flower Whose Name I Do Not Know. He has also written a collection of essays, as well as two works of fiction, Crossing Wyoming and Free and Compulsory for All. A recipient of the Pushcart Prize and the Wyoming Governor’s Arts Award, Romtvedt serves as the Poet Laureate of Wyoming.

Dilemmas of the Angels: Flight

Before she got here,
there was something else—
not this coffee shop
next to a drug rehabilitation center
filled with war veterans of the past,
men and women strapped to their chairs,
birds straining to rise from clotted piles
of feathers, bones, and blood.

But it felt the same.
