Hugh Martin is a veteran of the Iraq war and a graduate of Muskingum University in his home state of Ohio. His chapbook So, How Was the War? (2010) was the winner of the 2008 Wick Student Chapbook Competition. Martin received an MFA from Arizona State in 2012 and lives in Tempe, Arizona.

Traffic Control Point

                                        In armor, sweat, and skin, I sat

                                     in the Humvee’s shell of steel.

          Miles of traffic moved down the freeway,

      north to Baghdad, engines shaking, vehicles blurring

                    against ghosts of the pavement’s heat.
