Susan Kinsolving is the author of the poetry collections The White Eyelash; Dailies & Rushes; Among Flowers; and My Glass Eye. Glimmerglass Opera commissioned her to write lyrics for a cantata entitled Constellations, and several of her poems have been set to music and performed in the United States and abroad. A recipient of the Poetry Society of America’s 2009 Lyric Award, Kinsolving has served as poet in residence at the Hotchkiss School in Connecticut.

Thermal Dynamics

In 1840 Herr Baumann, half-blind, but overheated

with hope, bought a beautifully crafted glass globe
from a famed German master specializing in eyes
light as bubbles and thin as skin. His hollow orbs,
fragile as Christmas ornaments, were custom-painted
to match each actual eye. The master claimed that
an eye socket never sagged under such insubstantial
weight, a lid could close with comfort and a handsome
countenance could reappear as if unaltered by injury.
