Alexandra Lytton Regalado holds an MFA in poetry from Florida International University and is at work on an MFA in fiction at Pacific University. She is the author of Café de El Salvador, Land of Coffee; Bay Islands: Las Islas de aa Bahia; and Salvadoran Settings. A finalist in Narrative’s Fourth Annual Poetry Contest, she was also runner-up for the Stan and Tom Wick Poetry Prize and a semifinalist for the Tupelo First/Second Book Award. Regalado lives in El Salvador with her husband and three children.

La Cachiporrista

Because I can’t take a photo through the bulletproof
    glass
as our car eases to the corner that merges with the highway
where a chop shop displays its wares of cars quartered
into fenders, grilles, rims, spoilers—I will have to remember
the man’s hooded eyes as he watches from behind the wire
