Evening Gray, Morning Red
I snap my locket eyes shut
& lay an ear to my lover’s
watch, as if his chest,
listening for the watery chorus
listening for the watery chorus
of heartbeats. I see yellow
skin & thick beards, the sailors’
louse-ridden clothes
frayed like almanacs
