Chris Martin was born and raised in Colorado, educated in Minnesota, and schooled in San Francisco; he later relocated to New York, where he received his MA from the Gallatin School at New York University. He is the author of American Music, chosen for the Hayden Carruth Award by C. D. Wright and published by Copper Canyon Press. His most recent chapbook is The Small Dance. Martin lives in Brooklyn and teaches in Manhattan.

Into daily veer


As Watts teenagers writhe
And jolt like the victims of electricity
We diminish them


To be, an earnest rage born
Of the absurd, a fit
Response to an irresponsible


Age, each morning’s paper
Soaked in a bloom
Of limbs, each ironing
People on couch
