Born in Burlington, North Carolina, she earned an MFA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She lives in Durham.

I once knew a boy who would eat one like an apple—
a raw red onion that stained his lips purple.

You put them in each dish, because you know
exactly what I like.
