Rusty Morrison, a finalist in Narrative’s Fifth Annual Poetry Contest, is the author of After Urgency, winner of the Dorset Prize. For her collection the true keeps calm biding its story, she received many prizes, among them the Academy of American Poets’ James Laughlin Award. Other work includes Whethering; Book of the Given; and Beyond the Chainlink (2014). Born in Oakland, California, Morrison holds an MA in education from San Francisco State and an MFA from Mills College.

Wrapping Fable

Her anonymous face is answerless now.    I am
the person standing beside her hospital bed, wrapped in the error of flesh


that is our history—
all that we kept, as if precious,       the seditious little toy incentives, the
    prettified


impotencies that passed    between us.
