Richard Smith was born in 1945 in New York City and raised in North Carolina and Virginia. He has worked for law firms and businesses in Cleveland, Chicago, and Southern California. Smith is retired and lives in San Clemente, California, and in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, with his wife, Annette. Several of his pieces are available in our Library.

A Travelogue

The trade winds that Vasco da Gama rode home from India five hundred years ago, with the beginnings of an empire in his holds, still blow up the Tejo estuary and help push the Langhorne to its mooring. It’s a sunny day, and already hot before lunch. The cruise line’s parsimonious schedule planners have valued Lisbon at seven hours. It’s the least time given to any of our ports of call.
