Maya Catherine Popa, Second Place winner of Narrative’s Sixth Annual Poetry Contest and Third Place winner in the 2015 Narrative 30 Below Contest, is also a recipient of the Gregory O’Donoghue International Poetry Prize and the Oxford University Martin Starkie Prize. Lewisburg

Longing, we say, because desire is full / of endless distances.

Driving down a highway in August, saving for later
the right word for now,                         desire whittled me
a tool I’d never seen before
                but knew how to use almost immediately.
