Sarah Cavanaugh is a photographer, writer, and founding trustee of the Merwin Conservancy. Born in the Pacific Northwest, she earned an MA in education at Stanford and has worked in the nonprofit sector for more than two decades in support of the arts, leadership development, the environment, children’s health, and human rights. Her photographs have appeared in many publications and campaigns.

Shot on Maui, the photographs in this portfolio document the work done by W. S. Merwin and his wife, Paula, over the past forty years as they’ve transformed agriculturally depleted land into a palm forest that’s their home. The photographer, a friend of the Merwins, has access to their preserve, and her eye brings to light a quiet and profound joy in creation.
