Jenny George, author of The Dream of Reason, is the winner of a Discovery Poetry Prize and a Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Prize. She earned an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and lives in Santa Fe, where she helps run a foundation for Buddhist-based social justice.

The horse had been beaten and flies
crawled excited on the beat marks.
He held still in the sunblazed pasture.
For some minutes I stood at the wire fence.
