L. A. Johnson, author of the chapbook Little Climates, was a finalist in the 2016 Narrative 30 Below Contest and won the 2021 Rumi Prize in Poetry. She received an MFA from Columbia University and is a PhD candidate in literature and creative writing at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

Atoms bind into crystals, silver
deposits in the backyard. Nocturne of cloud
and shadow, I dream backward


into daybreak. An afterthought, I witness
bells stuck in their glassy pitch,
echoing the thin music of birds.
