Sara Houghteling, winner of the 2016 Narrative Prize, also won First Place in the 2016 Winter Story Contest. Her debut novel, Pictures at an Exhibition, was a New York Times Editors’ Choice book and a San Francisco Chronicle Best of 2009 Book. She teaches fiction in the Stanford Continuing Studies creative writing program.

The Audition

A piano audition with life-changing implications: Sara Houghteling’s reading from her novel in progress captivated the audience at Narrative Night 2017. Houghteling was awarded for the Narrative Prize for another music-inspired piece—“The Thomas Cantor,” about the genesis of Bach’s famous Goldberg Variations—and, in addition to her reading, she spoke about the international response to the story’s publication in Narrative.
