Jessica Hincapie is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Michael Adam Thesis Prize in Poetry (2018). She earned an MFA in poetry from the University of Texas and serves as program director of the Writing Barn, a writers’ retreat and workshop center. Born in England and raised in South Florida, she lives in Austin, Texas.

Doorknob Comments

A doorknob comment refers to when, in therapy, patients reveal their most painful conflicts during the last minutes of a session, often with their hand already on the doorknob.

Does it get overwhelming?
The tendrils of peas Mother shuffled
in the colander, or the low-slung greenery
suffocating the infants, their small hands slapping
to Miss Mary Mack and all those silver buttons.
