Sandra Sidi, Second Place winner in Narrative’s 2021 Spring Story Contest, holds an MA in political science from Yale and an MFA from Texas State University. She was an analyst with the US military in Baghdad and is a guest instructor at Marine Corps University, where she lectures on female integration in combat, sexual assault prevention, and US foreign policy in Iraq. She teaches writing at Texas State University.

A Story

Eylon Itzchaki saw his death every morning. Shards of glass in his back. The force of an explosion rupturing his liver, his kidneys, without ever breaking the skin. He breathed the pain in, allowed himself to feel it, and let it go. He liked to start his morning this way. A good bomb tech, Eylon taught himself to relax amid the chaos and then to learn it again the next morning. Learn to love it, even.
