Janet Burroway, a finalist in Narrative’s Fourteenth Annual Poetry Contest and First Place winner in the 2017 Winter Story Contest, is the author of numerous novels, including The Buzzards, Raw Silk, and Bridge of Sand. Her work also includes short fiction, plays, poetry, essays, texts for dance, and children’s books. In addition, she coauthored Writing Fiction, the most widely used creative writing text in America. Burroway is the Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor Emerita at Florida State University.

High time now for a brief thought of one other
displaced, conscripted by your Shock and Awe:
Today, in kilt and crest for you, your brother,
struggling to be cheerful, nostrils a little raw,

displaced, conscripted, by your Shock and Awe,
nevertheless rallies the ragtag troop
that is struggling to be cheerful. Nostrils a little raw,
he serves them beer in a lopsided loop,


a means of rallying the ragtag troop:
the preacher, the in-laws he can’t quite keep straight
downing beer in a lopsided loop,
the hunting pal—arriving a little late—
