Kara Levy was born in Washington, DC, and holds an MFA from Columbia University. She was a 2006–2007 Steinbeck Fellow in Fiction at the Martha Heasley Cox Center for Steinbeck Studies. Her work has been nominated for inclusion in Best New American Voices, and she was a finalist for the CutBank Montana Fiction Prize. Levy teaches writing at San Jose State University and lives in San Francisco.

Kara Levy, appearing at Narrative Night San Francisco in March 2009, as a winner of the Narrative30Below Contest (2008), revealed the talent and command of a writer who is the real thing. Her story goes boldly into the most mortal and potentially mortifying of subjects—chronic illness, sex, and envy—and emerges with gifts of humanity.
