Matthew Zapruder, born in in Washington, DC, is the author of six poetry collections, including I Love Hearing Your Dreams (Scribner, 2024) and Come On All You Ghosts, a New York Times Notable Book of the Year, as well as two books of prose: Why Poetry and Story of a Poem (Unnamed, 2023). Zapruder teaches in the MFA program at St. Mary’s College in Moraga and lives in San Francisco.

Yellowtail

Today the wind made a little movement
as if it were trying to reassemble.
I looked up from my affidavit. I had been
a witness to a dream in which my father
had never been alive. Sometimes
my life feels taped, and quiet evenings
I listen back. I hear the humming of the car
