Peter Filkins was born and raised in Dalton, Massachusetts. A graduate of Williams College and Columbia University, he has published three books of poetry, including Augustine’s Vision (2010). He has received the Stover Poetry Award, a Berlin Prize, and honors for his translations, and was a finalist in Narrative’s First Annual Poetry Contest. Filkins lives in western Massachusetts, where he teaches writing, translation, and literature at Bard College.

The Wild Boar

Was it Kiki or Heinz who we hitched
that ride with from Hamburg to Berlin
twenty years ago, the sun setting across
the barren expanse of a North Sea marsh
as the car (an out-of-service ambulance)
pulled onto the transit highway from which
no exit was allowed except to stop,
