Stephen Kuusisto is the author of the poetry collections Only Bread, Only Light and Letters to Borges, as well as the memoirs Have Dog, Will Travel, Planet of the Blind, and Eavesdropping. A graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, he teaches at Syracuse University, where he holds a professorship in the Center on Human Policy, Law, and Disability Studies.

“Follow your dog!” Forget philosophy or Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Don’t bother asking questions. Truth is: the time spent asking questions might kill you. The advice was proffered by Kathy Zubrycki, director of training at Guiding Eyes for the Blind, the nation’s premier guide dog training program. Kathy continued: “A guide dog wears a harness for a good reason. There’s no slack in a harness. When the dog takes decisive action, you move in tandem and without delay.”
