John Witte is the author of three poetry collections, including Second Nature, selected by Linda Bierds for the Pacific Northwest Poetry Series of the University of Washington Press. The recipient of numerous fellowships and awards, Witte lives with his family in Eugene, Oregon, where he teaches ecopoetry and literature courses at the University of Oregon.

Kinglet

A smoke-gray  snippet  flicking
mist  from the madrone  we had forgotten
it zipping  through the limbs  huddled inside
all winter  its brisk
swagger  ramping and sizzling  loopy  freaked
flashing its tiny  gold crown  as if to say
see how  in love we are   how brief
how fitfully  burning
