Ed McClanahan is the author of several novels and story collections, including The Natural Man and A Congress of Wonders. A 1962 recipient of a Wallace Stegner Fellowship, McClanahan remained at Stanford University until 1972, when he joined Ken Kesey’s band of Merry Pranksters. His memoir, Famous People I Have Known, humorously recalls his experiences as a Prankster. McClanahan resides in Lexington, Kentucky, with his wife.

Here is an annotated page from Ed McClanahan’s unpublished story “Hacksaw,” drafted in summer 1975, when, according to McClanahan, “word processing meant stuffing one’s manuscript into a Cuisinart.”
